DIY Hair Scrunchies

The scrunchies are back!

I tend to consider myself a borderline 80's girl because I was born in the 80's, but I was pretty young at the time so I didn't fully experience it like others may have. One of the fads that really stuck around in my house, though, was the hair scrunchie!  I have three older sisters and we all had long hair and were pretty active, so scrunchies were an everyday part of life.  We had a big blue bin of hair scrunchies we all shared (although we'd kind of stash our favorites in other places), and I even remember my sisters teaching me how to make them.

So imagine my delight (and surprise) when I saw hair scrunchies are on trend again!  It's pretty common now to see teen girls wearing them in a low, loose ponytail. That's not how we used to wear them, but it works!  And if you're reading this blog post, there's a good chance you know a girl or two who is wanting some fabulous hair scrunchies of her own.  So let's get started!

The first task is to decide which method you want to use:  1) Using a purchased hair elastic, or 2) using 1/4" wide sewing elastic.  Both work just fine and I grew up using the second method so it's definitely fine. However, the first method is one I came up with on my own just recently (although I probably wasn't the first person to do it) and it's by far my favorite. Because I had long thick hair, my scrunchies were always sagging so I always had to put in a hair elastic underneath my scrunchie - or wrap two of them together to get them to stay up.  But this first method does away with that!  I took my favorite hair elastic that is nice and stretchy but still tight, and I sewed the scrunchie fabric right around it. (No, I didn't have to cut the elastic! I'll show you how... )  It stays in my hair much better!  But if you're a traditionalist and want to make a scrunchie using supplies in your sewing room rather than your makeup bag, you're welcome to choose the second method!  They're very similar and end up looking about the same. I'll go through both way step-by-step so you won't have to do any flipping back and forth.  Here goes!

Using Your Favorite Hair Elastic

First of all, grab one of your favorite large hair elastics. My favorite is the Goody Ouchless found in most local stores and online.

2nd Day of Christmas: Christmas Card Holder

It's the Second Day of Christmas at CKC, and that means another free project for your holiday crafting! Today Melissa will show us how to make a large Christmas decoration that is not only super cute, but also functional:

Isn't it awesome?  One of my favorite things about the Christmas season is sending cards to friends and family, and of course hearing from them in return.  Now we have the perfect way to display them!

You can either hang the card holder right on the wall, as we did above...

Fringe Necklace Tutorial

As you've probably noticed, we are in a phase recently where we love all things FRINGE!  Today Tiffany Vela has a new fringe tutorial to share with us, and what I especially love about this project is that we can add fringe to an outfit without having to actually make an all new outfit! (Not that I mind sewing new outfits... but these are super quick!).  I love the detail Tiffany puts into her creations and I'm excited to share this one with you. How gorgeous is this:

Amazing right?!  Her fringe necklace totally completes the outfit. You don't need any special supplies to make one -- just some strips of knit fabric. What a great scrapbuster!  You can even use part of the tutorial to make a braided headband like she's wearing in the photo.

Tiffany also used the same technique to make a lace fringe necklace. The steps are the same; you simply use lace fabric instead of the knit fabric:

Patriotic Flag Pillows

NEW BLOG POST WITH UPDATED LINKS FOUND HERE.

Memorial Day is a big deal in my community (and hopefully yours too) and I love to decorate for the occasion. Many of the families here have been around for generations and we have a lot of veterans to honor. We go around to visit the cemeteries decorated with flags, and I like to make it meaningful for my kids as well.  I thought it would be fun to whip up some flag pillows for our house for Memorial Day, and of course these will be perfect for the 4th of July and other occasions too!

Aren't they fun?!  You can use solid fabrics or prints, and this is even great as a scrapbuster after making those cute patriotic outfits for your kids. The more you mix up the prints, the more whimsical they will look. I think it would even be cute to sew the seams inside out and make it a rag pillow. I will have to try that on my next one!

With today's free pattern you will learn how to make both the traditional rectangle shape and the heart shape pillow.  The steps aren't hard at all and we have saved you the headache of all that measuring. You can just cut and sew!

Sarah's Scrappy Banner
If you haven't noticed it yet, Tiffany and I take A LOT of pictures for Create Kids Couture. We are always looking for ways to make our pictures look fresh and new; one of the easiest ways to do this is with scrappy banners. We're excited to show you one of our favorite things to make for pictures, birthday parties, holiday decorations, curtains, etc. This would be great for so many things including presents for those special people in your life. Don't limit your imagination to photoshoots; this is a versatile item with lots of potential! Oh, and did we mention it's a scrapbuster?!?

Difficulty Level: Beginner
Materials Needed:
  • Approximately 7 fat quarters (more if you would like to make it wider)
  • Ribbon
  • Scissors
Cutting:
First, you are going to cut the ribbon that the strips will hang from. With 7 fat quarters, the banner is approx 24 inches wide, we recommend doubling that--48 inches--for the length of the ribbon so you have extra on the sides to hang the banner from. Set aside.

Now we are going to take a fat quarter and we are going to add a 1/2" snip every 2" along the 18" side as shown below. Repeat with the additional fat quarters.

Step 1: At every snip we are going to tear the fabric down the entire length of the fabric. This will create all of our scraps for the banners.

Step 2: We are now going to take our ribbon and begin tying one end of our scrappy strips to the ribbon. I chose to do it in a pattern--because I have OCD, lol--but you can just mix them up for a funky look! It would also be cool to mix in some different textures like lace, tulle, and ric rac! Get creative! If you like shorter banners, the scrappy strips can be tied in the middle, it will also be a fuller banner.

Once you have all of the strips tied on, you're done! Easy as that! Here are some more pics from some of our shoots.

Happy Sewing!

How To Tuesday: Charm Packs

So I always notice when there is giveaway going on with charm packs all my ckc girls are not jumping on it. And you should be!!!! So I teamed up with Southern Fabric this month. To show you guys that there are still a ton of great things we "clothing seamstresses" can do with charm packs.
So I got this awesome set of charm packs.! And the colors are to die for.

And so I sat and played with them during nap time and then it hit me!! So below you will find tutorials on how to make a Fall scarf and belt.

Lets start with the scarf! Cute eh? I love it! Your going to need 8 squares and 1/6 a yard of flannel or fleece.

So to start you will place your pieces right side together and sew down one side. You will repeat this step until you have 1 long strip that has a total of 8 squares.

Next you will cut your flannel and or fleece to 5''x40''. You will then pin your flannel and scarf right sides together. And starting at one end you sew along all four edges, making sure to leave a one inch gap to turn the scarf right side out.

Now you top stitch all 4 outside edges making sure to close the open gap.

Next you will make a mark 8 inches up from one of the ends. This is where you will make a button hole like shown.

And buy sliding the other end though that button hole you are now finish!

Now on to the super easy D ring belt. The only thing you need for this is a pair of D rings. 1st measure your little ones waist and then add 10". Then take this number and divide it by 5. This will give you the number of squares you need for your belt.

Now just like we did with the scarf we will start by making one long piece of squares. (1 x # you came up with)

Next  we are going to be ironing our belt in bias tape form. To do this we will take our strip, fold it in half length wise, and iron so we have a nice crease. Open the strip back up so the crease is going down the center. Now we will fold both of the long sides in so that they meet at the crease in the center and iron. Once ironed fold it in half again lengthwise like we did in the beginning; the original center crease we made will be along the bottom and the two folds will be lined up at the top.

Now top stitch down both lengths of the belt.

Now we are going to finish our two short ends. One you will hem and the other you will attach the the D rings by sliding the fabric though the D rings and folding the fabric over onto its self and stitching it closed.

And yes just like that you are finished with the belt!! Boo ya!

And to just top it all off I also made a matching hair bow by using the scrap buster tutorial I posted a few weeks back.

So now here is the fun part! Southern Fabric has provided us with a second charm pack to giveaway! So make sure to go check them out. They have some of the sweetest customer service and they carry some very trendy fabrics. Some by designers I had never heard of. And if you know me, you know that is rare!
I mean really look at some of these new lines they are getting in! Im swooning!
Okay so here is the Giveaway, make sure to enter and start thinking of all the fun goodies you make with the charm pack!
Happy Sewing Y'all!!

Scrapbuster Bow!!!

Its been a while since Ive done a scrap buster post. And after Melissa (a CKC pattern tester) from Three Dutch Divas shared a picture of a bow she made using the armpit cut out of a new pattern she was testing. I knew I needed to share this great idea with you.

OH and yes this picture is a sneak peek of a new pattern coming out in next few days. Your very welcome.
So anyway we all have a TON of these laying around and if your a true seamstress you know you don't toss them. Even if you don't know what to do with them. But now you use them to make matching fabric hairbows!!! AMAZING, I know!

So lets start by cutting off the curved ends or two of our "armpits" creating a small rectangle. Remember to save that small pieces for later.

Now with right sides together, sew along all four sides.

After you have sewn all around the rectangle. Take your seam ripper and make a small slit in the middle of ONE layer of fabric.

Next push all of the four corners though the small slit, flipping the rectangle right side out.
I like to use the back of my seam ripper to really make sure that all the corners are pushed out.

Now top stitch all along the outer edge of the rectangle. and steam it nice and flat.

We will now fold our fabric like a fan into fourths. And pin in place.
Now we will stitch down the center of the folded fabric and set it aside.

Next we take one of the bottom curve pieces that we sit aside in the 1st step and we fold it into 3rds like shown. and then top stitch down both sides.

Now its time to pull out the hot glue gun and start burning our finger tips. Starting with the bow, glue one side of the clip to the back of the bow. Then glue one end of out long piece on top of where we just glued the bow to the clip.

Wrap the fabric around the bow (gluing where needed) and back around to the back of the bow. Stopping where we left off. Snip the tail off and just like that. You have a sweet little fabric bow that matches your completed dress.

Happy sewing Y'all!
