Sewing with Knits: Debunking the Mystery

Our friend Heather, owner of Girl Charlee, is stopping by today to talk to you a little about sewing knits. Until recently, most CKC patterns have been for woven fabrics, but now we are branching out into knits patterns, and we want to help take the mystery out of sewing knits. To be perfectly honest, I (Robin) was scared to death to try sewing knits for the first time, but Heather sent me a sample of her fabulous knit fabric to try, and so I dove in. I made a pair of Kelsey's leggings, and it was so much easier than I thought. Here's Abby modeling them, not bad for my very first try, right?

If you haven't taken the plunge yet, we hope this post will give you the confidence you need to dive in. To give you a little more encouragement, Girl Charlee is offering a discount code just for CKC fans: it's 10% off of your order if applied before checkout.

Fabric Consultant- All About Basics

Hello everyone at Create Kids Couture! It's Kimberly from Fat Quarter Shop! Are you ready to hear a bit about fabric? As the fabric consultant on Create Kids Couture, I will be stopping each month by to talk to you about what is happening in the world of fabric! We are surrounded by fabric here at Fat Quarter Shop and want to share some of the prettiness with you!
To make sure we cover our bases, we are starting with the basics. Basics, especially solids, are necessities in so many projects to tie cute and bold prints together! Solids sell really quickly around here because of their many uses. You can find them featured in many quilts and they have started to steal the show in the modern quilting community. Solids are also frequently used in apparel. All of you seamstresses should have a big stash of solids to use in your sewing projects.

Free Ribbon Blanket Tutorial

We've all been busy making handmade gifts for our little ones over the past few weeks, and Tiffany was recently reminded of the very first thing she ever sewed. It was this simple handmade gift that she created for her baby boy that opened the floodgates of creativity and started on her sewing journey-- A ribbon blanket, sewn completely by hand, every stitch sewn with love.

Covered Buttons

How cute are these covered buttons??? I found these in  this Etsy shop and just think that they are the cutest little things I've ever seen. I have a thing for birds, maybe because my name is Robin, I don't know.

Someday I will own one of these...

But for now, it's off to Joann's for the much cheaper version! Covered buttons are a fun, cheap, and easy way to dress up your creations.

Snowman Ornament and Finger Puppet

Hello, CKC fans! Annika from Bugga Bugs here with a fun tutorial to make your own Snowman Finger Puppet Ornament!
I confess, I am a firm believer in Christmas trees children can actually touch.
In a house full of them I've learned it's okay if my tree doesn't look perfect. I'll admit, the metamorphosis it goes through during the season as their little hands rearrange its treasures can be quite entertaining. But I love it. It's proof that the joy of the holiday has crossed their precious minds at least once that day without my instigation. It's proof they're still little. It's proof they're still home. One day, all too soon, I'll have a "perfect" Christmas tree.. and I'll long for these days of imperfection {and then my grandkids will arrive and we'll have triple the rearranging we did in the past. hehe}.
So, without further ado I give you...
The Snowman Finger Puppet Ornament
An ornament meant to be played with!

As many of you know, I’m in a rental house while waiting for the house to be finished building.  I’m living out of boxes to unpack as little as possible.  I wanted to make some decorations that didn't require any sewing (because it’s all packed up) and was easy (let’s face it I don’t always have a lot of time with four very small kids).

Banner making is the perfect project for kids.  I left it very simple so that they can help color it, or you can print it on colored paper or even scrapbook paper.

Christmas Countdown Blocks

Hello there, my name is Melissa. I am the owner of Three Dutch Divas. I usually spend my time designing and creating princess and character inspired aprons, dresses and of course beautiful children' s clothing made from CKC patterns!  Sewing new items for my shop is my passion,  however this time of year brings out the crafter in me!
If you have children in the house and they are anything like mine, I'm sure they were asking how far away Christmas was before you finished clearing the Turkey off of the Thanksgiving table! I have spent days answering the question "MOMMY, how many days is it until Christmas?"  I have come up with a fun and decorative answer to that question!!

Free Tutorial Tuesday: Dog Bed

With the Christmas season fast approaching, I know you all are probably scrambling to find the "perfect" gifts for your family. With all the hustle and bustle don't forget the furry loved ones! I have a fast and super easy tutorial to bring you today for the beloved dog (or cat!) in your life.
My puppy Jack. Who could get mad at a face like this?!?
My puppy is teething badly right now so I needed a dog bed that if he chewed on it, I wouldn't care. Let me add that he has already ripped to shreds chewed one bed that I spent lots of money on thinking it would last forever. Surprise, surprise, it didn't! lol. After throwing lots of ideas around in my head I came up with a great bed that is easy to make, doesn't require sewing (because who wants to sew EVERYTHING), goes together quick, and doesn't cost a fortune. My 3 year old daughter had a blast helping me make this bed!
