Oh the dreamy flowing twirl of a circle skirt! It is one of my favorite design features, and nothing adds that extra wow factor like horsehair braid trim. I have been seeing it on some beautiful designs, and I just had to try it.
If you're not familiar with this trim, it comes in a variety of widths from 1/2" to 3" usually. It feels like a stiff mesh. You can find some smaller widths at some craft stores, but ordering online is the cheaper way to go, especially if you are wanting a larger quantity. I ordered mine on Amazon, but you can find cheaper per yard options from some international sellers.
So when you have your horsehair braid, you can whip up your favorite pattern with a circle skirt and get started! You don't have to use this trim with just circle skirts, but this is a perfect way to finish the raw edges.
You can watch this video tutorial, or use the step by step tutorial below.
The first thing you want to do is cover the raw edge of the hhb (horsehair braid) trim. You can use bias tape, your ribbon.
Next you will pin the hhb to the RIGHT side of the raw edge of hem of your skirt.
Now you can flip the hhb over to the WRONG side of your skirt.
Next you will pin the hhb in place. I recommend that you press your hem at this point on a lower setting so you don't melt the hhb trim. Then you can sew the trim in place 1/8" from the top of the trim as shown by the line below. Make sure your bobbin thread matches your skirt because that thread will show on the other side.
And it is as simple as that! What a wonderful new skill to add to your repertoire! When you're looking for that extra wow, consider adding horsehair braid trim to your next circle skirt!
This tutorial features Juliette's Perfect Party Dress, which will be available on Monday, February 25, 2019! It's a simply beautiful pattern with several options for all lovers of circle skirts. The bodice slips on without any enclosures with sleeveless or cap sleeve options.
