I love the look of watercolors blending together, plus they're super fun to paint with. Did you know you can also use watercolors to paint on fabric? Today Tosha is here to teach us how to not only paint on fabric with watercolors, but also how to make it keep looking great, wash after wash! All you need are the right supplies and techniques. And guess what -- after the tutorial we even have a GIVEAWAY!
Isn't the final dress gorgeous?! Tosha started out with plain white fabric and ended up with THIS! It was the perfect dress for her little girl's kindergarten graduation. And now you get to learn how it's done!
SUPPLIES:
textile medium (also available at most craft stores)
water
Here's a closeup of the textile medium bottle, so you know what to look for:
INSTRUCTIONS:
First, cut out the pieces of white fabric according to whatever pattern you're going to make.
Next, fill one of the cups with water. Fill the other cup halfway full of water and halfway full of textile medium. You can use any amount you need, as long as it's a 50/50 mix.
Lay the fabric pieces out on a drop cloth with right sides up. Spray the fabric with a water bottle until it is saturated.
While the fabric is wet, dip your brush first in the water and then in whatever paint color you want first. Paint the fabric any color(s) you want. The more paint you use the brighter your colors will be. To get lighter colors, use small amounts of paint and more water.
While the fabric and paint is wet, brush the water/textile mixture over the painted area. Let dry.
Then follow the textile instructions on setting the paint. I put my pieces in the dryer then pressed each one with the iron.
Finally, assemble the garment as instructed in your chosen pattern.
And that's it! You're done!
So gorgeous! Thank you, Tosha, for this tutorial!
I love that we can do this with any style, any pattern, and any colors. Yay for versatile techniques!
