Today Audra has a kid friendly project that will be perfect for the season of traveling and visiting family! Whether you need a compact activity to take along, or are looking for a fun gift idea, Audra has you covered! Let's get started!
Materials:
1/2 yard woven fabric
1/2 yard felt from the bolt
12-inch zipper
2+ sheets white craft felt
2+ sheets green craft felt
1 sheet craft felt each in black, orange, red, yellow, brown
Scissors
Rotary cutter and cutting mat
Ruler
Pins
Sewing machine
Iron
Optional: fabric paint, hot glue, additional colors of felt sheets or other embellishments
Cutting the Fabric:
If you prefer to cut using a rotary cutter and cutting mat, cut each piece in the following sizes:
If you prefer to cut using the pattern pieces included continue here:
Fold woven fabric in half widthwise, lay pattern piece against fold and cut 1 each of back top piece and back bottom piece.
Fold felt fabric piece in half widthwise, lay pattern piece against fold and cut 1 of front piece
Lay cut out pieces on top of felt sheets and cut desired pieces
For snowman buttons/eyes/mouth pieces there is a pattern piece included but you can also cut a 1/2” strip of felt and then cut into 1/2” pieces for as many as you would like.
When all pieces are cut your fabric piles should look something like this.
Assembling the bag:
Step 1: Take back top piece and lay it right side up. Lay zipper on top of back top piece with zipper face down. Pin along the edge.
Using a zipper foot on your machine sew along the edge. You may need to stop close to the zipper pull with your needle down in the fabric, lift your presser foot up and pull the zipper past your presser foot.
Once the zipper pull is out of the way, continue to sew the rest of the length of the zipper.
Step 2: Take back bottom piece and lay it right side up. Lay the zipper with back top piece attached right side down on back bottom piece. Align edge of other side of zipper with the back bottom piece. Pin together, making sure to keep back top piece out of the way. Sew along the edge using the zipper foot.
Step 3: Turn right side up, press seams, being careful not to melt zipper. Top stitch seams on both sides of zipper using the zipper foot being sure to catch the seam allowance in the top stitching.
Step 4: Lay front felt piece down. Place back piece on top, right side down and align edges. There may be extra length to the felt fabric (to account for different zipper widths), trim any excess so that top and bottom pieces are the same sizes. Pin around all 4 edges and sew together, using a 3/8” allowance. Make sure not to catch zipper stops in the seam.
Clip corners, making sure not to cut the seam. Open the zipper and turn the bag right side out.
Step 5: Build your Christmas Tree and Snowman! Multiple pieces are included for a variety of decoration options for both the tree and snowman. Have fun and use puffy paint and/or hot glue (or more!) to add detail and embellishment to your decoration pieces.
You can store all of your pieces in the bag.
And it's time to play!
