Hey Y’all! Stephanie Baker here again for my last unicorn
freebie! It’s summertime, and if you’re like me, you’re looking for activities
for the kids! Here’s a fun one you can make with your kids, and the final piece
is perfect for on the go and road trips!
Introducing Velvety Enchanted Beauty Crayon Case! This fun
little felt case has slots for holding crayons and a pocket the perfect
size for blank note cards.
Here’s what
you need to complete this project:
3 sheets of felt for main piece
ribbon
2-3
sheets of felt in coordinating colors
optional vinyl for free
cut files
First thing
we need to do is cut out our 4 ear pieces from a felt sheet of your main color
and 2 horn pieces from a felt sheet in a coordinating color.
Then take 2 ears and place them WRONG side
together. We will topstitch them together along the curved edges, .125” from
the edge. Repeat with the other 2 ears and the 2 horns as indicated in red.
Optional: you can sew diagonal lines across the horn about .5” apart. Set those
aside for a bit while we work on the rest.
We will now cut out a rectangle 3.75” W x
6.5” L from the same color as our main pieces. Take one sheet of our main
color, lay it on a flat surface. Measure up 1.5” from one of the short bottom
edges, and pin our rectangle on top centering it on our sheet. Sew along three
edges as indicated in red, .125” from the edge.
Next, we are going to cut another
rectangle 6.75” W x 2.5” L. Find the center of the long edge of that rectangle
and place a pin there to mark it.
From the center pin, measure over 1.125”
to the right and place a pin and again, 1.125” and place another pin. Repeat
this measuring from the center pin to left side of the rectangle.
We are now going to pin it to the other
end of our felt sheet, measuring up .5” again from the other short edge of our
sheet. Center the rectangle and pin to the sheet at the center. Then, measure
over from the long edge 2.25” and pin the short edge of the rectangle there.
Next, evenly pin the rectangle down at the
additional pins we places on the rectangle. We should now have little “hills”
in our rectangle. Sew along short ends of the rectangle, .125” from the edge
and then a line at each of the additional pins as indicated in red.
We will now sew along the long bottom
edge of our rectangle, .125” from the edge, creating small pleats.
Take a 1” long piece of Velcro and
separate the pieces. Pin one piece centered under each of our rectangles and
sew. Set aside that sheet of felt for now.
Take our second piece of felt, and apply
the vinyl eye cut file if you are using it. I made the eyes 6.5” wide for
reference.
Next, I took the coordinating colors and
free hand cut some hair. Mine are about 3.5” W x 3.5” L. Place them as you’d
like and topstitch on as we did the rectangles.
Take the horn piece and center it on the
top of the sheet. Pin it in place.
Measure over 2.25” from the center of the
horn and pin the top center of one ear. Repeat with the second ear in the
opposite direction.
Now, cut 2 pieces of ribbon, 8” long
each. Pin each end of one ribbon between both ear pieces. Repeat with the
opposite short end on the sheet.
Take our sheet with the rectangles sewn
on and lay it right sides together on top of the sheet with our unicorn face.
Pin around all 4 edges and sew 3/8” from the edge leaving a 4” opening on one
of the long sides.
Clip the corners and turn our piece right
side out. Use the turning tool to really push out the corners for a nice crisp
corner. Then topstitch around all 4 edges, closing the
opening.
Now our crayon case is complete!! Add
some crayons, I opted for glitter crayons, well because all unicorns need a
little glitter!
This is the last of the unicorn freebies and the last day of
#CKCunicornweek! We hope y’all have enjoyed it just as much as we have!
