Every nursery needs a fresh custom nursing pillow cover! We are exciting to share a fast pattern with no zipper! You can add velcro or snaps, but I prefer to use mine just like an envelope pillow case. So grab some adorable fabric, and lets get started!
Most kinds of fabric are suitable (knits, wovens, fleece, minky...). This pattern is designed for a classic "Boppy" style nursing pillow. If you have a different nursing pillow, you can trace your boppy and use the techniques in this pattern to create one that will fit your pillow best. Be sure to add in a seam allowance and about 2" to accommodate your pillow.
Here's what you will need:
- 5/8 yard fabric for the front
- 3/4 yard fabric for the back
- Pins, scissors or rotary cutter
- Cutting mat (if using rotary cutter)
- Optional snaps or velcro (I did not find this necessary, but if you want to keep the cover more securely closed, these are good options.
- Download the free pattern pieces for the nursing cover here.
*Note we will use a 3/8" seam allowance for this project.
Cutting Out The Pattern
After cutting out the pattern pieces, lay the front pattern piece on the fold of your front fabric and cut out.
Next lay the TOP portion for the back of the nursing cover pattern piece on the fold of the fabric and cut out.
Next lay the BOTTOM portion for the back of the nursing cover pattern piece on the fold of the fabric and cut out.
Construction:
This is what the back pieces look like when cut out.
This is what the front piece looks like cut out.
If using knit or fleece fabric, you can fold the straight edges back 1" and pin in place and sew. If you are using woven fabric, fold back 1/2" and press, then fold another 1/2" and press again. Pin in place and sew.
Lay the front of the pillow cover with the right side up facing you. Next lay the TOP portion of the back piece, with the right sides facing down.
Lay the BOTTOM portion of the back on top of the front piece, right sides together and pin in place.
Here is a picture of the other side. Sew ALL the way around the nursing pillow cover. You can clip the curves of the cover so it will turn out more smoothly.
Turn the pillow cover right sides out.
To insert the nursing pillow, open the back as shown here.
Slide the ends of the pillow into the cover.
Fold the top portion of the pillow cover in place. If you would like, you can add some velcro or snaps to keep the back of the cover in place more securely.
And there you go ~ a quick and easy nursing pillow cover!

Does this fit the Boppynursing pillow?
ReplyDeleteDoes the pattern already have the 3/8” seam allowance?
ReplyDeleteThe pattern should include all the seam allowances. I made one for my sister and didn’t read that it needed allowances and it was way too small. Not including it could mess a lot of people up especially if they are working with limited fabric.
ReplyDeleteI was thrilled to find such a detailed description to make a slip cover....followed the instructions....sewed it...and it did not fit my boppy pillow :(
ReplyDeleteIt seems when making you need to add 2 inches to accommodate the pillow. Before cutting I would place the pillow on the pattern to make sure there is room for seam allowance and adjust as needed.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate you sharing this blog article. Really thank you! Really Great.

Am looking to make some Boppy covers for
ReplyDeletemy daughter and was excited to find this pattern that doesn't bother with zippers. If I found cute Aggie fabric, it would be an added bonus!! Whooop!! :) Gig 'em!
Thank you for the share. As a recommendation to any others considering this: expect to add fasteners as the overlap definitely is not enough to prevent gaping, mind the 3/8" SA and the size was fine for a newer boppy pillow.
