🎁 12 Days of Christmas πŸ‘©‍🍳 Day 9: Chef's Hat

🎢On the 9th Day of Christmas CKC gave to me,
a Chef's Hat Pattern for your whole family🎢!

Baking is one of my favorite holiday traditions, so adding a chef's hat for our 12 Days of Christmas FREEBIES is so exciting!  Jamie is bringing us this adorable tutorial today, so I'll turn it over to her!

Materials Needed:

Approximately 1 yard total woven fabric
Approximately ¼  yard of fusible interfacing
Sewing Machine and basic sewing supplies
Cutting mat and rotary cutter or scissors
Iron and ironing board

This pattern comes in four sizes:
Toddler (Purple Cut line)
Child (Navy Cut line)
Tween (Blue Cut line)
Adult (Green Cut line)
*Note: The band is for an average head circumference, so it would be best if you measure the head circumference before making the hat to ensure a nice fit.
**You will be using a 3/8” seam allowance, unless instructed otherwise.
First, you will need to print the pattern pieces and cut the size you desire.

Construction:

After you cut out your pieces, should have a pile similar to this.

Step 1: Lay your main band with the right side facing down on the ironing board. Lay your fusible interfacing piece on top of the band and iron in place. Be sure to read the instructions from your fusible interfacing if you are unsure how to iron in place.
Now fold the band in half widthwise, pin, and sew.

Step 2:  With the interfacing on the inside, fold the continuous band in half lengthwise. Iron in place.
Sew a basting stitch 1/4” around the raw edge of the band to secure. To sew a basting stitch, you will use the longest stitch length on your sewing machine.

Step 3: You will now sew a gathering stitch on your main hat piece. To do this, your machine will be on the longest stitch length.  Do not backstitch on your machine or you will not be able to gather.

Once you have sewn a gathering stitch all the way around, you will now gather the main hat piece. To do this, gently pull the bobbin thread to begin gathering. You will use the band as your guide.  Pin the right side of the hat to the right side of the band as shown in the picture below.

Sew the main hat piece to the band using a regular stitch length. Finish your seam allowance with a zigzag stitch or a serger.
Now flip the band down, and topstitch 1/8” from the seam.

Step 4: To construct the bow, lay your main bow piece and bow center with right side facing up on a flat surface. Fold in half lengthwise, pin, and sew.

Now turn, so the right side is facing out. Iron so the seam is in the middle. Fold in half widthwise, pin, and sew.

Turn again, so the seam allowance is on the inside, and iron in place, so the seam is in the middle.

Fold the main bow piece back and forth to pleat. Insert a pin in the center to hold in place. Slide the bow center to the middle, and remove the pin.

Step 5: You will now fold the chef hat in half, so the seam on the band is on the right side of your cutting mat, and the center front is on the 0” line. Measure over 3” and pin the bow in place. To secure the bow, sew around the bow center as shown in the picture.

You are now finished with your chef hat in 5 easy steps!
