DIY Bible Cover

It's the Seventh Day of Christmas at CKC and for today's free project we have ShirleyD showing us how to make this super cute and functional Bible Cover!

What a perfect gift for the season! And I'm pretty sure I need to make one as a gift for myself too. Here's ShirleyD with her tutorial!

 You will need:
(Based on the 4 different fabrics used below)
3/8 yd. main bottom fabric
¼ yd. main top fabric
3/8 yd. lining fabric
3/8 yd. inner slips
½ yd. fusible Interfacing
Velcro

Other Supplies:
Sewing machine
Scissors
Ruler
Matching thread

First, you will need to measure your bible.

Find the Length (shown in white above) and add 1" total for seam allowances. Write that down.
Find the width including the spine (shown in pink above). Add 1" total for seam allowance. Write that down.

It is important to write these two numbers down because you will be using them a lot!

For this tutorial I used my study bible which measures 11” Length x 16” Width
(That’s with ½” seam allowance added to all sides -- the 1" as instructed above.)

Now you are ready to cut out all your fabric pieces. You may want to go through the list below and write them down before you start cutting!

Main top fabric: Cut 1 piece 4" Long x the Width you calculated
(Mine was 4” x 16”)

Main bottom fabric: Cut 1 piece  8" Long x the Width you calculated
(Mine was 8” x 16”)

Main Interfacing: Cut 1 piece that is 1.5" SHORTER than your Length x 1.5" SHORTER than                your Width
     (Mine was  9 ½” x 14 ½”)

Ric Rac: Cut 1 piece the Width you calculated
(Mine was 16”)

Lining: Cut 1 piece the Length x the Width you calculated
(Mine was 11” x 16”)

Inner Sleeves: Cut 2 pieces the Length you calculated x 10"
(Mine was 11" x 10")

Inner Sleeve Interfacing: Cut 2 pieces 1" SHORTER than your Length and 1/2" LESS than half of your Inner Sleeve, for the Width
(Mine was 10” x 4½”)

Closer Piece:  Cut 2 pieces 4 ½” x 2 ½”

Closer Interfacing: Cut 1 piece 4” x 1 1/2”

Velcro:  Cut one 1/2” piece

Place the main top fabric on top of the main bottom fabric with right sides facing each other. Sew. Press the seams when done.

Pin your ric-rac on top of the seam you just created. Sew in place.

On the right edge, measure up about 5" from the bottom corner, and in about 1.5" from the right edge. Yours may be a little higher or lower, depending on the size of your book and where you want the closing strap to be.

You will now place the fusible interfacing on the fabric pieces that require it. Beginning with the main fabric piece, iron the interfacing to the center of the wrong side of the fabric, according to package instructions.

Repeat with the small closer piece and its interfacing.

For the inner sleeve piece, first fold the sleeve in half width-wise and iron. Place the fusible interfacing on one wrong side and iron in place. Then repeat for the second inner sleeve piece.

Grab both closer pieces place them right sides together and sew three sides, leaving one short end open. Clip the corners. Turn right size out. Iron and top stitch the edges.

Take one of the inner sleeve pieces and topstitch just inside the fold line with wrong sides together. Repeat with the second sleeve piece.

Now grab your Lining piece, face it right side up and place both of the Inner sleeve pieces on top with the stitched folds facing towards each other. Baste stitch all 6 sides together, as shown in the photo above.

Place the Closer piece on the top of the Inner slip, and baste in place. (Make sure you sew it at the same height as your did your velcro earlier.)

Place the Main front piece on top of the lining, with right sides together. Pin and sew all around, leaving about a 3” opening at the bottom. Clip corners and turn right side out, press. Hand stitch the opening closed.

Finally, attach Velcro to the Closer piece, making sure to match up with the piece already on the front.

And you're done!

Thanks so much to ShirleyD for this fabulous tutorial! I have a feeling that after I make one, I will want to make a BUNCH more. I also like that we can customize it to different sizes of books.

We can't wait to see the covers you make! Happy Seventh Day of Christmas!

  1. Thanks for the tutorial; I had been looking for one that is easy to follow. I plan to try this, but add handles and possibly a layer of fusible fleece.
